Traditional mud-set showers with a liner behind the mortar bed can develop leaks for years before a stain shows up on a ceiling below. By then, framing and subfloor damage is often already extensive.
The Schluter Kerdi system creates a continuous waterproof membrane directly behind the tile — walls, floor, curb and niche — instead of relying on the tile and grout themselves to keep water out. Every seam is sealed, every penetration (shower valve, drain, niche) is treated individually.
We use the same waterproofing system whether it's a $15K guest bath refresh or a $75K primary suite. A leak doesn't care what the budget was, and the labor difference to do it right is a few hours, not days.
If a contractor can't explain their specific waterproofing method by name, that's worth pausing on. "We waterproof it" isn't a system — Kerdi, Wedi and similar sheet-membrane systems are.
